About the Competition
Highland Exposure is a major digital photography competition running throughout the 2007 Scottish Year of Highland Culture. We want to find and showcase the most stunning and inventive expressions of "distance" in the contemporary Highlands and Islands, within the context of the Culture Year themes: Arts, Environment, Heritage, Language, Science and Sport.
How do you define distance?
"Distance" is a concept usually perceived from a geographical perspective. We want to challenge you to also look at other types of distance:
- distance related to human relationships (emotional, perceptual)
- distance related to social and cultural dynamics (economic, political, generational)
- distance related to space and time attributes (historical, scale, migration flux)
We invite you to draw from these examples of distance and offer your own personal interpretation and definition.
How do you define the Highlands and Islands?
The Highlands and Islands is the area covered by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, which is in itself the Scottish Parliaments Highlands and Islands Constituency area. It covers the Highland, Argyle, Moray, Orkney, Shetland and Western Isles Council areas. It also includes the Clyde Islands of Arran and Cumbrae. To put it the other way, the only hilly, lochy bit of Scotland not covered by HIE is Loch Lomand and the Trossachs. We are only looking for photos that are of and from the Highlands and Islands, but of course photographers can live anywhere.
